Rising Ranch Project
The Rising Ranch Project consists of approximately 1000 acres located in parts of Sections 16 20, 21 and 29, all in Township 32 South, Range 12 East in Chautauqua County, Kansas. The county seat is Sedan, located about 30 miles west and south of Independence, Kansas. The land is rolling pasture with some trees along the waterways. The lease is held by present oil production. The gas rights are not included. CLICK HERE to see a Lease Map of the area.
The production is from Pennsylvanian age sands known locally as the Wayside Sand and Wieser Sand. The oil was first developed here in the early 1980's when some 80 wells were drilled on the property. These wells showed early profitability but as the profitability declined the price of oil also declined and the wells became uneconomic, although they were still capable of production. With the recent rise in crude oil prices, the property has again become profitable to produce. At the present time, the wells are being reworked and put back in production.
Reservoirs of this type are stratigraphic and are driven by solution-gas drive. In new wells this gas quickly dissipates, leaving little reservoir energy to move the oil into the boreholes. Consequently, some 80% of the oil remains in the reservoir as residual oil. This seeps into the boreholes at low rates over a very long period of time, as is happening now. To increase the rate of movement of this oil through the reservoir and thus increase the production, it is planned to start to inject water to restore some of the original bottom hole pressure. Seven to nine wells will be used for injection purposes initially.
